 | Labour refuses to say when Trident Successors will be built |
 |
John Gough, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Barrow & Furness is calling on John Woodcock to state clearly when he believes the Trident Successors will be built after Mr. Woodcock refused to answer this question in a live debate on BBC Radio Cumbria at 7am on 24th February 2010.
Mr. Gough explained:
“I asked Mr. Woodcock, that if he believed the Conservatives would delay the Trident successor then could he say when he expected the build of the new boats to commence in Barrow. Mr. Woodcock could not answer this and merely said it would be in line with the 2006 Defence White paper that gave the go ahead for the Trident replacement. It appears he does not know, or will not state a date, and if he will not state the date by which he expects work to commence, then it is utter nonsense for him to claim the Conservatives will delay it. Mr. Woodcock has been exposed on BBC Cumbria to be nothing more than a spin doctor who does not know his facts about the successor programme and he should apolgise.”
Mr. Gough continued:
“The facts are: Labour have delayed the Astute programme by a total of 4.5 years (average 9 month delay for boats 2-7), have only ordered one submarine in thirteen years against Conservative orders of eighteen from 1979 to 1997, and they have failed to meet the original timetable set out in 2006 for the successor boats which would have seen the concept design of the new boats signed off in September 2009. This did not happen which is why I am being honest and saying, if elected, we will have to sort out this mess, and establish a realistic timetable for completing the Astute order and building the Trident successor boats. We will do this and secure jobs and submarine building in Barrow for many years to come, and that is why I say the only five year threat to this yard is another five years of Gordon Brown.”
