 | John comments on the visit of Lord Young |
 |
John Gough, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Barrow & Furness commented on the visit by Lord Young last week.
“I find the Labour Party’s protestations on the shipyard increasingly shrill and once again ignorant of the facts. The facts are: Labour have delayed the Astute programme by nearly five years, and as a consequence 230 jobs are being lost, Labour have only ordered one submarine in thirteen years compared to eighteen ships and submarines ordered by the previous Conservative Government, and the job losses in the 1990s were caused by the end of the Cold War, not by some wicked Tory plan to close down the shipyard. Mr. Woodcock would have you believe that the Labour Party opposed these cuts, but they didn’t, they were just as keen to see the so called ‘peace dividend’ as the yard downsized. All Labour is doing is trying to spread scare stories about the Conservative commitment to the yard which we have repeatedly stressed and I will release further information on soon.
It is all very well for a Lord Young and Labour to claim that things would be worse under the Tories, but every Labour Government in history has left unemployment higher than when it took office and once again Labour is just not working. Last week we saw the largest increase in long term unemployed and record numbers on out of work benefits. The Government should adopt our plan to tackle the deficit and ensure a stable recovery. Instead, Labour is pursuing a path that will undermine confidence, threaten higher interest rates and mortgage rates and put the recovery at risk.
That is why I say the only threat to this yard is another five years of Gordon Brown, and not some fanciful threat that Labour will try and scare you with.”
