John Gough, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Barrow & Furness, comment on John Woodcock’s recent visit to the shipyard.
“I’m glad that Mr. Woodcock was impressed by the shipyard, I have been on my three visits to date so this is something we agree on. It is ironic that he enjoyed the tour of the DDH, which was built by the last Conservative Government to build the Vanguard boats, something his party vociferously opposed at the time. He will have also seen ‘Ambush’ and ‘Artful’, again ordered by the last Conservative Government.
Mr. Woodcock continues to peddle his line that the Conservatives threaten the shipyard but he refuses to tell you that his Party has already delayed the Trident successor and the remaining ‘Astute’ boats by nearly 5 years.
The reality is that from 1979 to 1997 Conservatives ordered eighteen ships and submarines from the yard, since 1997 Labour have only ordered one. I have published a list of these orders on my website at www.furnessconservatives.co.uk
There is only one ‘five year’ threat to this yard and it is not the Conservatives, it is another five years of Gordon Brown, and his cronies.”
